Engineering Science Symposium

Held each year during the SHPE National Convention, the Engineering Science Symposium (ESS) is a showcase of the excellent research conducted by SHPE students and faculty members across all engineering fields.

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION

This year, we are soliciting long-form abstract submissions in advance of the convention which will be evaluated by a panel of engineering faculty and industry judges.

ABSTRACTS DUE SEPTEMBER 24

View advice for preparing a long-form abstract, FAQ, and instructions for abstract submission >

Abstract submission is performed electronically by the date specified above. An abstract is a short (2 page max) description of the work performed including a statement of significance, methods, results (quantitative) and discussion and conclusions. The abstract instructions provide additional hints/advice on creating a competitive abstract.

Abstracts may be based on work performed at any time prior to the abstract due date AND within the year of the SHPE National Convention. A committee of faculty reviewers will judge abstracts and only students with the highest scoring abstracts will receive an invitation to present at the SHPE National Convention.

ORAL PRESENTATIONS

Students interested in participating in the Research Paper presentations must submit an abstract for the Symposium. Selected participants for the research oral presentations will prepare a 10 min talk with 5min for questions. Audio/Visual will be provided. Please bring your own laptop. No written paper is required.

RESEARCH POSTER PRESENTATIONS

Students interested in participating in the Research Poster presentations must submit an abstract. Selected presenters in the research poster session must bring a poster to the SHPE meeting and stand by it to answer questions during the Symposia poster session Friday evening. No written paper is required.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

There is no limit to the number of abstracts an individual may submit. There is no limit to the number of co-authors in a single abstract (some co-authors may be faculty advisors/mentors). The first and presenting author must meet eligibility requirements and is the only author eligible for conference registration fee support and/or prizes.

PARTICIPATION SELECTION CRITERIA

Abstracts will be reviewed and judged by a committee based on the following criteria:

  • Importance of work to technology and/or science is stated or explained
  • Originality of the abstract (i.e. this is a novel investigation)
  • Quantitative results are presented in the abstract
  • Completeness (i.e. the results address the research question, no “will be completed”)
  • The conclusions of the study are stated

Awards will be judged across multiple categories with cash prize awards for best category presentations, best-overall presentation, and honorable-mentions.

The categories are anchored across thematic grand challenge areas where engineering researchers have a role to play in solving society’s greatest challenges. The thematic categories are meant to be inclusive of broad areas, so please orient your presentation toward any category that is closest to your research efforts. If your research does not closely match any thematic area, please consult the ESS Committee Chair, Dr. Cristian Gaedicke ([email protected]), who will remedy the situation. The thematic areas are:

  • Avances – Advances in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Augmented and Virtual Reality, Big Data and Cloud Computing, Cybersecurity, Electronics, High-Performance Microelectronics, Personalized Learning, Signal Processing, (Sociolinguistic-Based) Facial and Voice Recognition Algorithms, the Internet of Things (IoT), etc.
  • Descubrimientos – Discoveries in Biological Systems (e.g., Medicines, etc.), Chemical Systems (e.g., Water and Wastewater Treatments, etc.), and Ecological Systems (e.g., Natural Environment, Carbon Sequestration, Nitrogen Cycle, etc.)
  • Innovaciones – Innovations in Alternative Energy Sources, Communication Systems, Electrical and Power Systems, Manufacturing, Materials and Materials Processing, Mechatronics, etc.
  • Mejorando – Bettering society in Engineering Design, Engineering Education, Field Research in Developing Countries, Health Informatics, Human Health and Safety, Research-Informed Policy Making and Change, etc.
  • Revoluciones – Revolutions in Building Codes and Specifications, Engineering Mechanics, Smart Cities Technology Development, Sustainable Design of Infrastructure (e.g., Construction Methodologies, Lifecycle Analysis, etc.), Resiliency against Climate Change, etc.

PRIZES

Cash prizes up to $350 for honorable-mentions, $1,500 for category winners, and $3,000 best-overall presentation will be awarded as evaluated by engineering faculty and industry judges. Only registered conference attendees are eligible for prizes (must be registered for SHPE by Tuesday, November 1, 2022).

IMPORTANT DEADLINES

  • Deadline for long-form (2-page max) abstract submission: Saturday, September 24
  • Notification of finalists who will present at the conference (poster or presentation): Saturday, October 8
  • Finalists present at ESS: Thursday, November 3
  • Winners of ESS will be announced on Friday, November 4 at 9:00am at the entrance of the Career Fair
